I was simply browsing the Winedrops website when, before I knew it, I had somehow completed a purchase and been charged. I’m not entirely sure how it happened, but the process felt a little too frictionless — it seemed far too easy to accidentally place an order. If Winedrops already has your contact and payment details saved, I’d urge you to browse with caution, as you may find yourself making an unintended purchase. Worth being aware of before you start exploring the site.

Winedrops offers a decent selection of wines at reasonable prices, which is genuinely appreciated. However, I’d urge caution with their spinning wheel or roulette-style promotion. Payment is taken immediately upon interaction, and the prices you end up paying through this mechanic can actually be higher than the standard retail price of the bottles — which feels counterintuitive and frustrating for what presents itself as a fun deal. It’s a notable blemish on what is otherwise a straightforward and enjoyable service. Worth being aware of before you engage with that feature.

The Winedrops app needs some serious improvement. I accidentally ended up ordering two cases instead of one, simply because it wasn’t clear whether my order had already been submitted. With no obvious confirmation or feedback after placing the order, I pressed the button a second time — and ended up with double what I intended. A clearer order confirmation screen would go a long way in preventing this kind of frustration. I hope Winedrops addresses this issue soon, as it made for a genuinely poor experience.

I was charged £115 for a membership that was not communicated clearly at any point during the purchase process. I originally clicked through an ad for Whispering Angel, and there was absolutely no mention of a membership fee on the checkout page. I only became aware of the charge when I reviewed my credit card statement. For a fee of this size, Winedrops has a responsibility to make this cost prominent and transparent before customers complete their purchase. This kind of unclear billing practice is deeply frustrating and erodes trust. I would urge anyone considering a purchase to scrutinise the small print carefully before entering their payment details.

I didn’t like this at all. Just a bit thin. Shame I got a couple of bottles. Used it for cooking.

Disappointing, all the hype I expected something amazing and was really disappointed. I tried a bottle with my neighbour and he had one glass and opened a different bottle. A musty flavour, not too pleasant and definitely not what I expected.

I received a push notification about a wheel spin, so I gave it a go — only to find that £15 had been taken directly from my account for a bottle of wine worth less than that amount. When I actually read the small print afterwards, I realised it was essentially a roulette-style mechanic where you can either win or lose. I’ll hold my hands up: I should have read the details before clicking. That’s on me. However, I genuinely assumed it was a lighthearted game offering discounts or free gifts, and the way the promotion was presented felt quite misleading. To make matters worse, Winedrops hasn’t even dispatched the bottle yet — apparently I need to purchase five more before it ships. I won’t be doing that. A clearer explanation of how the promotion works upfront would go a long way towards avoiding situations like this.

I found the website quite confusing to navigate, which didn’t get things off to the best start. I placed an order for a six-bottle case, but since then Winedrops has been sending me a constant stream of promotional messages about other products. It’s simply too much, and unfortunately it has put me off returning as a customer. I’d encourage Winedrops to take a closer look at how frequently they contact customers after an initial purchase — a little restraint goes a long way. For now, I won’t be ordering again.

My main gripe with Winedrops is the aggressive push towards subscription sign-ups. I find the whole approach a little questionable — simply logging in apparently gets you automatically enrolled, which feels underhand and is not the kind of experience customers should have to deal with. That said, it would be unfair to give no credit at all: every now and then you can find genuinely good wine at a reasonable price, and that does save it from a one-star rating. If Winedrops sorted out its subscription practices and made the sign-up process more transparent and opt-in, it could be a much more trustworthy service. As it stands, the shady onboarding process is a real barrier to recommending it wholeheartedly.

Chateau La Vue, Saint Emilion, 2018

I was really disappointed with this bottle. It was far too overpowering and aggressive for my taste — big, punchy flavours that just didn’t work for me. I actually ended up leaving most of it.

I’m not a big Sauvignon Blanc lover in general, so take my review with a pinch of salt. But if you prefer something more elegant and less “in your face,” this probably isn’t the one for you either.

Shame, as I had high hopes.

My issue was that the messaging around the initial offer was not at all clear. I had no idea when I made my purchase that I was signing up for a recurring subscription — I simply thought I was making a one-off purchase. Once the regular payment became apparent, I cancelled straight away. Winedrops really should make this far more prominent and transparent from the outset. Customers deserve to know exactly what they’re committing to before they complete their purchase, and burying that information does not make for a positive first impression.
