History of Stellenbosch

Founded in 1679 by Governor Simon van der Stel, Stellenbosch is the second oldest European settlement in South Africa and the cradle of its wine industry. French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution arrived in the 1680s, bringing with them invaluable winemaking skills and viticultural knowledge. Stellenbosch University, established in the early 20th century, became the leading center for viticultural and oenological research in the country.

After the end of apartheid, Stellenbosch led South Africa’s re-emergence onto the world wine stage, with a renewed focus on quality and terroir expression.

Red

Fun Facts about Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is home to the oldest and most established wine route in South Africa.
Pinotage was created in 1925 at Stellenbosch University by Professor Abraham Perold, who crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (then called Hermitage).
The region is often referred to as the "City of Oaks" due to the large number of oak trees planted by its founder.
The "Cape Doctor" is a strong south-easterly wind that blows in the summer, helping to reduce disease pressure in the vineyards.
